Shelter is the First Law of Winter Survival
A lesson I took to heart from my winter camping experiences, dressing properly in clothing that meets the conditions is crucial to a comfortable outing.
When properly dressed ensures comfort in cold and wet conditions; if you’re not, you’re in for a miserable and possibly life-threatening situation.
Shelter starts with clothing, the clothing you wear from head to toe to meet the outdoor conditions you’re recreating or working in.

2025. I just completed the Winter Outdoor Survival Training with Mark, the second course I've had the pleasure of attending now. Once again, I was struck by how much I managed to learn in so short a time, and how much fun I had doing it. With his decades of hands-on experience and a carefully constructed program, he provides an environment that allows students to understand the realities of a survival situation as they learn new skills they can immediately apply and succeed in. I highly recommend attending any of Mark's classes, and I'm already looking forward to my next! ~Rainer Bergmann

Wisdom of the North woods when your life depends on your axe.
“You may loan your last dollar to a friend; but never loan him your axe, unless you are certain that he knows how to use it.” ~Horace Kephart
The Second Law of Winter Survival is Hydration
Our body requires a minimum of water to function at peak levels during cold winter months. Proper hydration is critical for decision making and the hard physical exertion of winter recreation and work activities.
Staying hydrated in winter
- winter hydration and dehydration
- accessing water
- water-purifying
- cooking pot suspension systems
- melting snow

“I attended Mark's 2025 winter survival course. I'd wanted to challenge myself and set out on a series of quests. This was the most daunting one - at least beforehand.
However, Mark made the whole learning experience approachable and deep, starting with a series of emails that helped to identify the clothing and kit we'd need. Even though I've watched survival videos and read such books for years and years, I was astonished at how basically every activity we did entailed learning something new.
Yes, part of it was the power of learning by doing. But more than that, it was the way Mark explained each activity, linking the skills to principles. Yes, there were times I was cold during camp, but nowhere as much as I feared. I left forever changed...and more confident that I can weather really tough conditions. Highly, highly recommended.” ~ RE Mason

The Third Law of Winter Survival is Fire Craft
A warming Fire may be the only thing between you and an exceedingly uncomfortable winter night when a survival situation leaves you without the necessary clothing, shelter, and sleeping gear required to provide warmth for your body.
